The actor has at last fulfilled his singing ambition by making it to the finals of the Marathi show. And guess what? He's a Tamilian!
Sumeet Raghavan had been on a break ever since Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai went off air and the next thing we know, he's reached the finals of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on a Marathi channel. And although Sumeet is a Tamilian, one only has to see him singing in Marathi to believe how fluent he is at the language.
"That's because of my Marathi theatre background," he smiles. Singing on a TV show is fine, but when does he want to return to acting on television? "I think Sarabhai... has been the biggest drawback of my career!" says Sumeet, but before one can question him, he laughingly adds, "Everything else looks bleak in front of it. I mean, I really can't see myself doing soaps. These days, TV is boring, in capital letters !" he rues.
Sumeet's recently returned from a cruise where he was shooting for Ajay Devgan's directorial debut U, Me Aur Hum . But ask him any question regarding the role or the film and he clams up immediately. Reason? He doesn't want to say anything that would reveal the plot. But Sumeet is more than willing to shed light on how he got the film in the first place. "I got a call from writer Robin Bhatt to come and listen to the film's script. Even though I liked the story, I was a little sceptical about doing a film," he says.
But why so? "See in a serial, if you're not in one episode, you will be seen in the second or third episode. But in a film, if you're not seen, then you're not seen at all," he explains. Sumeet's apprehensions got over when he met Ajay. "He's very cool and he's a fab director. I'm paired opposite Divya Dutta and we all had a blast shooting for the film," he adds.
Sumeet is aware that he is taking a big risk with films. "Every actor has to take risks. It's not like I'm leaving television but I need to get a really good role," he clarifies. Sumeet admits that he does feel tense thinking about what will happen once the film gets over but he doesn't dwell too much on it. "But I don't think that much ahead. At the moment, I'm happy doing two things that I've always wanted to do - singing and acting in films," he smiles.
