I never wanted to do a Marathi film: Sumeet Raghavan

I never wanted to do a Marathi film: Sumeet Raghavan

Actor Sumeet Raghavan is back to his roots after about 15 years. The actor who started his career with theatre way back in 1986 has taken a break from television and is focussing onLekure Udand Zali, a Marathi play.
"I am basically a theatre person. Doing a Marathi play was on my mind for a long time. However, due to the busy schedules of television, I was unable to devote time to theatre," he says. Sumeet is working with his wife Chinmayee in the play after 20 years. He smiles, "We had worked together in a play way back in 1993. It is fun to work with her again. Both of us have matured as actors."
Though the actor hasn't done much of television after Sarabhai Vs Sarabhaihe says that he needs a break from television. "It was a deliberate decision to take a break from television and do theatre for some time," says Sumeet adding, "Sarabhai was the turning point for my career in television. I had set a high bench mark with Sarabhai and I didn't want to do anything below that."
Sumeet dreams big when it comes to Bollywood. He has featured in small time roles like the one in My Name Is Khan. "It is extremely difficult for a television actor to make a place in Bollywood.

There are very few examples of those who have made it really big. Television actors usually get small roles in Bollywood films," Sumeet laments. Ask him why and he replies, "A television actor enjoys the comfort and security of television, therefore he doesn't go looking for too much work." Sumeet has always been averse to doing Marathi films. "I never wanted to do a Marathi film," he says. " The kind of Marathi films that were being made during 1990s did not suit my taste. I didn't see myself fitting anywhere in that genre." However with the changing scenario the actor is open to doing Marathi films now.
